Migraine Emergency Kit: What to Have Ready at Home, Work, and When Traveling

Migraine attacks are unpredictable. Despite the best preventive management, attacks occur, and when they do, the difference between an attack that is managed quickly and effectively and one that escalates into a prolonged, disabling episode often comes down to preparation. Having the right tools immediately available — without having to search, drive to a pharmacy, or ask someone else to manage logistics during a severe attack — is a practical and undervalued component of migraine management.

A migraine emergency kit is a collection of the specific items that allow a person with migraine to treat an attack at its earliest stage, manage the environment during an attack, and access essential information if emergency medical evaluation becomes necessary.

The Acute Medication Component

The foundation of any migraine emergency kit is a sufficient supply of the person's prescribed or preferred acute medications. This means keeping medications in the kit itself rather than relying on medications stored elsewhere in the home or office. A kit that does not contain the medication is not useful during an attack when retrieving medications from another location may be difficult or impossible.

The acute medication component should include the primary acute medication in the form that works best for the individual. People who experience significant nausea should consider whether their primary acute medication is oral, as nausea may impair absorption of oral medications. Nasal sprays, dissolving tablets, or injectable forms of triptans are available and may be more effective in the context of significant nausea. A rescue or backup medication for attacks that do not respond adequately to the primary acute treatment should also be included, along with anti-nausea medication if nausea is a prominent attack feature.

Environmental Management Tools

During a migraine attack, reducing sensory input is among the most effective symptomatic management strategies. The kit should include an eye mask or sleep mask that blocks light completely, earplugs or noise-canceling headphones to reduce sound exposure, and a cold pack or gel mask for application to the forehead or back of the neck.

A cold pack applied to the head or neck provides mild pain relief through its vasoconstrictive and counter-irritant effects and is a simple, medication-free complement to pharmacological acute treatment.

The Home Kit

The home kit is the most comprehensive and can include the full range of items listed above. It should be stored in a consistent location that is known to household members who may need to assist during a severe attack. Including a brief written instruction card that describes what the person needs during an attack — including which medication to take, how to reach their healthcare provider, and when to call emergency services — allows others to help effectively even if the affected person is unable to communicate clearly during a severe episode.

The Work Kit

A work kit should include the same core components as the home kit in a more portable format. A small bag or pouch that fits in a desk drawer or bag allows rapid access during an attack at work. Informing a trusted colleague about the kit's location and what to do if assistance is needed reduces isolation during attacks that occur at work. Keeping a spare dose of acute medication in the work kit prevents the situation of having medication at home but not at work when an attack begins during the workday.

The Travel Kit

The travel kit adds specific items relevant to travel-related trigger management: electrolyte packets for rehydration, a sleep mask and earplugs for aircraft environments, the healthcare provider's contact information and a brief medical summary including diagnosis, medications, and allergies, and sufficient acute medication for the duration of travel plus buffer for delays or extended trips. Carrying acute medication in hand luggage rather than checked baggage ensures access during flight delays or lost luggage scenarios. A list of local pharmacies or urgent care facilities at the travel destination, prepared before departure, provides a resource if additional medication is needed during the trip.
